Spencer Spit and Hunter Bay

We awoke yesterday to 1/4" of frost on the boat and a clear day. Planning a lazy day we left Cap Sante Boat Haven after fueling up, crossed Rosario Strait and then Thatcher Pass to poke around Spencer Spit under blinding blue skies and crystal clear air. Moving from the North Side of the spit we hugged Frost Island where there was plenty of water (24 feet below our keel) in the little pass between the Island and the Spit. After checking out Hunter Bay we started back to Cap Sante. Today Radar and the Trip function of my piloting system went down simultaneously. You can't be an optimist on a boat and finding that out sooner rather than later is probably a good thing overall. Tech support had me do a self test and found the magnetron and ships heading (radar system) had failed. Because the trip function on auto pilot also failed they thought it was a power problem. The GPS and chartplotter did not fail and a few minutes later the radar started working half heartedly again and the trip function of auto pilot started receiving data again but I'm not sure it's really working, doesn't seem to be. Never a dull moment around here. Last year on a friend's San Juan 38, a beautiful powerboat, three electronic systems went down in the course of a month's trip from Seattle to the Broughtons so I've already seen the value of keeping up the paper charts and having back up systems first hand. Wish I had back up radar. Nonetheless, I love my little boat and still consider her my magic carpet. I'd like to come back up to the San Juan Islands for a month in the winter so I'd have all the time in the world to wait out the weather.
